Using Setting to Emphasize Character Traits and Tension
In the earlier posts here in the Design Series, I’ve gone extensively into using setting, especially juxtaposition, for characterization.
But here’s one more tip:
Want to reveal your character’s inner traits quickly?
Put them somewhere they don’t belong.
- A shy bookworm at a deafening nightclub.
- A linebacker at a ballet.
- A pacifist in a war zone.
- A minimalist in a hoarder’s house.
The environment becomes a mirror for internal tension, and an external way to show discomfort, resilience, hypocrisy, or transformation.
Even better: Pair characters in opposing settings where each exposes something the other lacks. Think “The Odd Couple,” Pride & Prejudice, or “Stranger Things.”
Let the setting highlight contrast.
Let contrast define character.
Happy Writing!
