I Don’t Really Have a Genre. Do you?
I know, every publishing blog, marketing article and teacher says, “You need a genre.” And sure, I guess it boosts the algorithm. But does it really matter?
For me? I write what I’m curious about. I write what I’m passionate about. To state it plainly and simply: I write what I feel like writing. And all good writing, from what I’ve experienced through my reading journey, has come from passion, not profit.
Yet even though my stories may not be connected through genre, they are connected through themes. So, under the surface, they imply…
- Meditation and mindfulness
- Feminine strength and struggle
- The tension between spirituality and science
- Philosophy, destiny, and truth in an untruthful world
I’ve written: Children’s fiction and nonfiction, but both are infused with themes of insight, contemplation, meditation, and philosophical insights. I’ve also written…
- Thrillers
- YA sci-fi adventure
- Satirical
- Sci-fi comedy
But I’ve never been drawn to straight horror or romance. I’m not against them, but I like romance when it’s weaved into the story through subplot in a mystery, thriller, or an epic adventure.
And horror? If there’s depth, symbolism, or metaphysical undertones, sure. But slasher or gore for gore’s sake? Not for me.
So What are My Genres?
Perhaps we could call them cross-genres with recurring themes. It’s playing with structure, sometimes through metafiction, and blending realism with surrealism and fantastical qualities. As readers, we suspend our disbelief after all. I also love philosophical and historical fiction, especially when the lies of history get exposed. I like creating female protagonists because that’s just what I know.
My stories ask questions like:
- Am I in control, or is destiny determined for us in some way?
- Can science and spirituality coexist?
- What does it really mean to be free in a world that handcuffs us in financial chains and where differences determine worth?
How About You? What’s Your Genre?
Do you stick to one genre, or are you an explorer like me?
What kinds of stories mesmerize you?
And do you ever feel the pressure to pick one thing to focus on, but still deviate?
Drop a comment below. I’d love to hear your genre journey, or your resistance to the whole idea. Because honestly? Writers shouldn’t be boxed in.
