An open book with pictures and highlights surrounded by pages ripped out around it...emphasizing building story structure and outlining a story

You are not alone if you’ve ever struggled with plotting your novel or screenplay. Many writers feel unsure about where their story should go next.

That’s where structure comes in, but not as a rigid formula. At Story Structure Studio: Device & Design, structure is a tool for emotional connection.

This category is dedicated to exploring the foundations of great storytelling.  We’ll start with the classic three-act structure. Then we’ll move into sequences, beats, and arcs. These elements help you shape stories that feel as good as they function.

We’ll cover character-driven arcs. These include positive change, negative change, and flat arcs. Each one demands a different approach to plotting.

You’ll learn how to use the Eight Sequence Method to build your story scene by scene. You’ll understand how to break Act II into two parts. This can help you pace the emotional highs and lows more effectively.

But most importantly, we’ll focus on what many structure guides overlook: the emotional experience of the reader. It’s not just about hitting the right beats. It’s about hitting the right emotional tones, at the right time, in the right rhythm. That’s why knowing the exact emotion to evoke in your reader is crucial during the outline process.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing series on:

  • Outlining your story using emotional beats
  • Matching character arcs to structure types
  • Crafting emotional cadences within sequences
  • And executing story structure in a way that feels alive and human

Because in writing, “execution is everything,” and emotional execution is what separates forgettable stories from unforgettable ones.

Every Tuesday, we’ll explore the craft of structure, from foundational theory to practical, emotion-centered techniques.

Welcome to the structure series at Story Structure Studio: Device & Design.

Let’s build something that moves readers.

Happy Writing!
